The walled garden of Mottisfont Abbey in Hampshire in midsummer is a sea of roses. Pink and crimson roses of yesterday, eulogised by classical poets and painted by the Dutch masters. There are damask roses, cabbage roses, moss roses and China roses. In June they open the walled gardens until 9 p.m. so that you can visit and wander around in the warm evening air drinking in all the wonderful fragrances.
