Hardy Nymphaea are aquatic perennials with rounded floating leaves and showy flowers on or just above the water, with numerous narrow petals and conspicuous stamens, in white and shades of yellow, pink and red. The blue variety is Nymphaea Caerulea a native from Egypt and once called the Blue Lotus.

Water lilies were depicted by the French artist Claude Monet (1840–1926) in a series of paintings.
