Dietes
Dietes is a genus of rhizomatous plants of the family Iridaceae, first described as a genus in 1866. Common names include Fortnight lily, African iris, Morea or Moraea iris, Japanese iris and Butterfly iris, each of which may be used differently in different regions for one or more of the four species within the genus.

Well it looks like an iris, but I didn’t expect to see irises here amongst the more southern hemisphere flora, so maybe I’m wrong! I’ll have a lot more to id before I leave 😉

Strange to have you photographing in my hemisphere! Irises are certainly part of many home gardens here – my uncle collected them in his Sydney garden and when he died my brother transported them to an iris-only area in his Canberra garden. Yesterday, I saw them preparing to bloom in a friend’s garden on the south coast.

Apart from today Jo I have been up at 6 am! But I am exhausted by the evening! The grandbaby is grand. Still very tiny, but full of wriggles and smiles. I am having lots of cuddles 🙂
I think that maybe a Dietes Jude, they have strappy leaves and the flower only lasts about a day but there are a lot of them in the clump. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dietes… How are you handling the heat?
I think you are dead right PP – thank you! I see it is a kind of iris. Flagging a bit today, quite sticky here which I didn’t expect it to be. I also have a horrid cold which doesn’t help 😦
Probably sudden change of climate and caught on the plane. Eat lots of citrus they are so juicy at the moment, and cheap. Hope you get well soon.
Feeling much better now – I took your advice and have been eating a ruby red grapefruit every morning for breakfast – that caused some raised eyebrows in the hotel as I had to dissect it myself! Now got a big bag of oranges to juice each morning too – so juicy!
