June is all about ‘the essence of summer’
(This month I want to see what summer means to you. Still focussing on the garden or parkland let your photographs tell me your story of summer-time wherever in the world you live. )
More scent this week, and a flower that shouts summer to me. Lilies. I have grown lilies in pots for years, though last year something came along and munched all the flowers off my favourite “Orange Pixie“, a dwarf Asiatic variety bred specifically for containers. Sadly Asiatics have no perfume, unlike Oriental Lilies, which are later to bloom than other types, with intoxicatingly fragrant star-shaped flowers that are superb for cutting. But when you see lilies in bloom you know summer has arrived.
And of course there are the daylillies (all one word) Hemerocallis , which comes from two Greek words meaning “beauty” and “day,” referring to the fact that each flower lasts only one day. Missed them last year as I was away from home, but I hope to see them flower well this summer as they are now out of a pot and into the garden.

Fabulous! The colours are all so rich, but I think my favourite is Orange Pixie.
I’m very fond of that one too, shame there is no scent though.
I’m not too bothered that there is no scent because I find the scent of some lilies to be almost overpowering. Maybe it is only a certain variety, but sometimes the ones that come in bouquets of flowers are so strong that I have to put them outside!
I agree with the scent indoors, it is overpowering, but outdoors is nice.
I have just bought an orange lily for my garden (a cheap rescued one from a supermarket) so it will be interesting to find out if it has a scent.
Ha! A woman after my own heart! I am always rescuing plants. Still have two chocolate cosmos that I rescued from the market in Ludlow for 50 p each (bought 3 but one died in the first winter). They are not hardy, but have survived three winters outdoors and looking good this year.
Here are some pretties that show what summer means to me 🙂

Lilies always remind me of my mother – she hated them. Such a strong reaction to such a lovely flower 🙂
maybe that is because of their association with funerals?
I suspect you’re right.

Thank you!
After weeks of absence, my garden is a jungle. But luckily, we have a park next door: https://geriatrixfotogallerie.wordpress.com/2016/06/25/the-essence-of-summer/
