“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.”  ~Albert Einstein; Mein Weltbild (1931)

I came across this sadly, dead dragonfly, whilst looking for living ones to photograph around the pond at Glendurgan Gardens last week. What struck me about the pose was how accurately the wings of this beautiful creature mimic the petals of the iris flower on which it lays. And the yellow of its stripes match exactly the yellow of the iris. You will need to enlarge the image to see what I mean. Even in death there is beauty in the details.

  1. Anyone who can photograph a dragonfly – even a dead one – has my seal of absolute approval. The detail here is stunning, and thank you for drawing attention to the camouflage skills of your subject.
