Flowers on Friday

This month is when the Allium comes into flower filling the gap between tulips and summer perennials. These plants, known as the ornamental onion, are grown for their showy flower heads which come in a wide range of sizes and shades of purple, blue, white and yellow. Even when the plant dies back the seed heads remain as attractive sculptures in the garden.

Bees love them too.

    • I planted 20 bulbs a couple of years ago of ‘purple sensation’ but only a few grew. Maybe I didn’t plant them deep enough, or the ground was too wet. A few more have flowered this year and the new ones are a charm.

    • First time I have grown these larger ones and although I dislike the leaves, the flowers are amazing! I have read that you can remove the leaves without it harming the bulb, so I have taken some of the tattier ones off. Hope this doesn’t affect next years flowers!

      • The leaves seem to die off very early, so you probably wont. I try to disguise the leaves with geraniums or other bulky plants. πŸ™‚

  1. All but one or two white alliums have quietly gone their way to plant heaven. I’ve been searching for new bulbs but can’t find any. These tall specimens punctuate and accent English style perennial gardens, and I miss mine.

    • I wasn’t originally after a perennial garden, but it is what I have ended up with. The Mediterranean dream ended once I realised just how windy, exposed and wet it is here!

  2. Love these, Jude! Some beautiful shots here. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Have a happy weekend! Hope all goes well next week. I’m having issues with my phone so I don’t know if I’ll be able to stay in touch.

      • Hopefully it will get by! I was trying to make more storage and I deleted Google Play not realising that it runs the show. Me and technology πŸ˜•. I can’t reinstall it but I seem to still have most functions 😢. We go early Tuesday. Wish me luck! Sweltering on the roof. Ocean breezes here we come πŸ˜ŽπŸŒŠπŸ¨πŸΈπŸ’•

  3. only a few of mine reappeared last month . . think I am going to have to have a bulb buying session this autumn πŸ™‚

    • Always good to plant fresh bulbs. I don’t think any other than crocuses and daffs (maybe snowdrops) come back well. I intend on having four or five pots of one type of tulip in each pot next year instead of mixing them.

      • Any I thought alliums went forever, I’ll enjoy buying. And yes noticed my neighbour does that, it works really well with lots of pots. MrB enjoys mixing up too much though!

        • Did you watch Gardeners’ World on Friday? There was a chap explaining all about alliums and how some don’t really come back at all. I shall just see what happens with mine. Purple Sensation are better perennials.

        • Totally missed it! I just assumed all did as my Mum has some fabulous ones. Now I know I will make sure I do some research before I buy the bulbs in the Autumn. So big thank you for the heads up πŸ™‚
