I’m back in Switzerland for this first December fountain. The delightful “Le Vieux Carouge”, with its specific old French-Italian architecture, its abundance of fountains, courtyards, shuttered houses and bohemian vibe, doesn’t feel at all like you are in Geneva.

The first thought that jumped into my head when I saw this fountain was ‘wow – that would be a headache’ 😉

I wasn’t familiar with the French word carouge so I looked it up. It’s apparently an alternate form of caroube, which is to say carob. Perhaps people had planted carob trees in this place (that Mediterranean species wouldn’t be native in Switzerland). Or maybe Carouge is just a name and has nothing to do with carob.
Hi Steve – I love reading comments, yours made me think, I went to the website of the city of Carouge trying to figure out where the name came from. from the site I gather that Carouge derives from the latin for Crossroads, reaching the end of my French I googled in English – apparently during Roman times was known as Quadruvium – place where four roads meet, 1248 was first mentioned as Carrogium..Wikipedia so much faster than reading the French websites – happy fountain watching Poli

Have you always collected fountains?
It does appear that way doesn’t it? But no, probably only since I started visiting Europe during the last decade.
Our native Aussie swans are black like the one in this fountain. They have ruffled wing feathers that remind me of taffeta. I love your fountain collection.
